Pinochet Steps Down as Senator-for-Life

Augusto Pinochet resigned as senator-for-life and formally ended his political career, days after Chile’s highest court ruled that the former dictator was mentally unfit to stand trial on charges of ordering political killings.
Chief government spokesman Heraldo Munoz called the resignation “an expected, logical and necessary decision,” and supporters and opponents alike welcomed the move.
A civilian government report estimated that 3,200 people were killed for political reasons under Pinochet’s rule.
