Government Reopens After Budget Impasse

Thousands of state employees returned to work after a three-day partial government shutdown.
Gov. Don Sundquist had furloughed more than half the state’s 42,000 workers Monday after lawmakers failed to pass a balanced budget by the July 1 deadline. The General Assembly broke the budget impasse Wednesday with a compromise that raised the state sales tax from 6% to 7% on everything except groceries.
