Ex-Councilman Named to Hernandez’s Seat

The Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees has filled a seat left vacant by the recent death of Benny Hernandez, whose long illness was closely watched in the Latino community.
The board named La Palma resident and former Councilman Brian O’Neal to the seat.
O’Neal has two sons who graduated from the district’s Kennedy High School.
“I have been involved in education and youth in some way for over 30 years,” O’Neal said in a statement. “I felt this was the next step in helping our district’s youth.”
As a former member of the board’s facilities committee, he proposed a bond initiative to improve district campuses.
Trustees agreed to place a $132-million bond measure on the ballot, and O’Neal led a citizens’ advisory committee that promoted the concept last year.
