Cingular Wireless, the second-biggest U.S. mobile-telephone company, is replacing Chief Executive Stephen Carter with SBC Communications Inc. Chief Operating Officer Stanley Sigman after third-quarter profit fell and customers defected.
Sigman is a veteran of SBC Wireless Inc., which merged with the mobile-phone business of BellSouth Corp. in 2000 to form Cingular Wireless.
Shares of San Antonio-based SBC rose 8 cents to $27.80 on the NYSE. Atlanta-based BellSouth fell 48 cents to $27.17, also on the NYSE.
