The federal government will not fine an environmental award-winning cheese maker for not reporting its use and release of a chemical used to clean equipment.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could have fined the Atwater-based dairy nearly $150,000. In a statement, it said no penalties would be assessed because Joseph Gallo Farms discovered the problem, informed the government, and fixed it.
Gallo general counsel John Whiting said the farm did not know it was supposed to report use and discharge of nitric acid.
