From the recording studio to the movie studio

Elvis Presley: “Loving You” (1957). This loosely biographical musical gave millions of fans around the world their first full glimpse of the magnetism that would make Elvis a cultural phenomenon.

Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl” (1968). Five years after a debut album that earned her a Grammy, Streisand became a multimedia superstar by winning an Oscar for her portrayal of Fanny Brice.

Prince: “Purple Rain” (1984). The film was wildly overpraised when released, but Prince moves through it with the arrogance and ambition that have made him one of pop’s most riveting figures.

Madonna in “Desperately Seeking Susan” (1985). Despite already topping the pop charts, Madonna, right, had a hard time getting people to take her seriously until her fresh, liberating performance in this film.

Ice Cube: “Boyz N the Hood” (1991). Cube, right, was so magical in this moving film about tragedy in the ‘hood that he ended up redirecting his energy from rap music to film.
