The April 15 deadline for filing state and federal income tax returns is just around the corner.
Low-income and elderly taxpayers can get help at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Centers, which operate at schools, churches, community organizations and senior centers at tax time.
These sites are staffed by volunteers who have been trained by the Internal Revenue Service. Three hotlines are able to direct consumers to local VITA sites:
* Info. Line of Los Angeles, (800) 601-5552.
* California Franchise Tax Board, (800) 852-5711.
* IRS tax help, (800) 829-1040.
