Injured Pincay Remains Undecided About Future

Injured in a spill on March 1, Laffit Pincay Jr., the world’s winningest jockey, said he’ll make a decision about his future after he visits the doctor again in three weeks.

Fitted with a halo brace after two fractures were discovered in his neck a few days after he was thrown from his mount in a race on Santa Anita’s hillside turf course, Pincay, 56, said he doesn’t know if he’s going to try to resume his career or retire.

“I’m doing pretty well,” said Pincay, who has 9,530 victories. “I walk really well. Actually, I feel great. I think they might take the halo off in three weeks. I’m just waiting to see what the doctor tells me. I have a lot of thinking to do.

“When I see the doctor and I’m told to take the halo off, I’ll have to have an MRI and then ask the doctor’s opinion. Based on that, I’ll make a decision.

“My family definitely wants me to quit and a lot of doctor friends of mine have given me their opinions, but I’m just going to wait and see at the last minute.”
