8 Die in Clash Over Redistricting

Eight people were killed and 150 wounded in a clash between police and rioters who were angered by a plan to redraw the municipal border in the central Iranian city of Semirom, official media reported. Windows of the city’s municipal offices and adjoining buildings were smashed and an undisclosed number of people were arrested. Two of the dead were police officers.
The government later rescinded the redistricting plan. Rioters apparently feared economic harm if their districts were transferred out of Semirom into the poorer neighboring city of Shareza.
