Israel Reelects Sharon as Prime Minister

Re “Sharon Wins Easily in Israel,” Jan. 29: I cannot believe that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was reelected. Didn’t they learn anything from World War II? Sharon is trying to exterminate Palestinians just like Hitler tried to exterminate the Jews. You would think the Jewish people would see the similarities.

The outcome of the election again demonstrates that when the proverbial lion and lamb one day lie down together, the majority in Israel want to be the lion.

Re “Israel’s Election Leaves Its Arabs Cold,” Jan. 30: Your article quotes University of Haifa political scientist Asad Ghanem as saying, “More and more Arabs won’t continue to play the game of democracy when it’s not really a democracy.” Really? In 1995, Oslo II was passed with a majority in the Knesset that depended on the votes of Arab members. A majority of the Jewish members of the Knesset were opposed to the accord.
The disastrous so-called peace process of Oslo, which brought terror to Israel, was a result of the participation of Israeli Arabs in Israel’s democratic process. If Israeli Arabs are dissatisfied with Israeli democracy it is because Israel is not prepared to allow itself to implode despite the explosions of the terrorists, which too many Israeli Arabs approve of, claiming allegiance not to Israel but to the terrorist Palestinian Authority.
