Assembly Panel Votes to Delay Prison Opening

A $340-million maximum- security prison under construction here may be placed on hold after an Assembly subcommittee voted to delay the opening by a year to help balance the state budget.
Prison officials say stopping construction wouldn’t save anything because the construction is funded with borrowed money the state will begin repaying when the facility is in operation.
Committee members say about $10 million can be saved by delaying the opening and closing three state Youth Authority facilities.
