Flooding’s Death Toll Mounts

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Monsoon floods have killed 10 more people in Bangladesh and in India’s remote northeast and stranded more than a million villagers, as weather forecasters warned that the region’s rivers continued to swell.

Officials in Bangladesh said Tuesday that the latest victims were four children, bringing the nation’s death toll from a weeklong deluge to 59. The fatalities occurred Monday in the southern and southeastern districts of Cox’s Bazar, Bhola and Feni, government relief officials said.

Authorities said flood waters have inundated nearly 20 of Bangladesh’s 64 districts, affecting nearly 1 million people. Many of those are marooned in their flooded homes, dependent on small boats for transportation.

Many residents have lost crops, poultry and livestock. The flooding has also contaminated wells, affecting drinking water and causing diarrhea and fever.

In India, floods and mudslides killed at least six people and forced more than 450,000 to flee their homes, in addition to disrupting road and rail transport, police said.
