Two Yolo County correctional officers pleaded not guilty to assault charges for allegedly beating an inmate.
Gary Culverson, 25, and Rod Van Kopp, 37, charged with assault under the color of authority, entered the pleas Monday in Yolo County Superior Court.
The guards were placed on administrative leave in May when an investigation was launched into allegations that they used excessive force against an 18-year-old inmate in Monroe Detention Center in Woodland.
A preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 3.
