Police probing a purported plot to attack Mecca arrested six more suspected Al Qaeda members who apparently escaped a raid on a bomb-filled apartment, newspapers reported.
The six suspects, reportedly arrested Sunday, join five others captured in the Saturday raid. A shootout at the site killed two security agents, plus five Al Qaeda militants suspected in May’s suicide bombings in Riyadh.
Saudis reacted angrily to the reported threats against Mecca, where police continued a crackdown Monday, manning checkpoints, checking identification papers and searching cars. Mecca is the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad.
