Hospital chain Tenet Healthcare Corp. said Wednesday that Robert C. Nakasone, former chief executive of Toys R Us Inc., has been elected to the company’s board.
Nakasone joins Edward Kangas, former chairman and chief executive of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, as the first two of four new independent members of Tenet’s board.
Investors have called for more independent oversight on Tenet’s board after more than half a dozen government probes were launched into the Santa Barbara-based company’s past practices.
Nakasone, 55, a founding director at Staples Inc., is a principal of NAK Enterprises, an investment and consulting firm. Nakasone is a graduate and trustee of Claremont McKenna College.
Tenet also said Wednesday that the company would hold its 2003 shareholder meeting July 23. Shareholders of record as of June 2 will be entitled to vote at the meeting.
Tenet shares closed at $15.75, down 3 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange.
