Voters Back Entry Into European Union

Slovaks have voted to join the European Union, putting the formerly communist country a step closer to joining the expanding bloc, Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said. He said “a large majority” approved the action in a two-day plebiscite, though official results were not yet released.
The referendum was largely symbolic. Parliament still has the final say but is nearly certain to affirm EU membership.
