Earthquake Toll Reaches 2,162

The death toll from Wednesday’s earthquake in Algeria grew to 2,162 as rescuers gave up hope of saving a girl and called a halt to the search for survivors.
Encouraged by locals who said they heard the voice of an 11-year-old named Sabrina, Italian rescue workers chipped and drilled gingerly at a collapsed four-story building in Boudouaou, east of the capital, Algiers. But as dusk fell, they called for heavy-lifting equipment to switch from rescue to recovery.
“It’s just not possible to find people alive. Only the dead,” said Levente Szabo, a weary Polish surgeon as he took a break in the nearby town of Boumerdas.
