Chalk it up to creativity

“ChalkZone,” Nickelodeon’s roller coaster of an animated series about the adventures of kid cartoonist Rudy Tabootie in a land where all the erased blackboard drawings go, is back for its second season tonight at 8. (Beginning June 6, it moves into its regular time slot of Fridays at 9:30 p.m.)

New this season is the recurring character of Vinnie Raton (voiced by Rob Paulsen), a sleazy land developer who accidentally discovers the secret land of chalk drawings, where polka-dotted rhinos, jumbo-jet-sized butterflies, flying pencils, a giant baby and miscellaneous doodlings come to life. He is determined to exploit it as a theme park.

The “ChalkZone” folk, including Rudy’s pint-sized superhero pal, Snap, rally ‘round, but by the end of the episode it’s clear that Vinnie will be back.

More fun is a later episode in which Rudy’s toddler cousin has her own adventure. Another installment features characters voiced by the Baha Men (“Who Let the Dogs Out?”).

Created by Larry Huber and Bill Burnett, this very different, creative offering about a world where imagination reigns supreme fits right into a lively Nickelodeon lineup that includes “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “The Fairly OddParents” and “The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.”
