Mubarak Appoints New Prime Minister
President Hosni Mubarak’s Cabinet resigned and the longtime Egyptian leader appointed Ahmed Nazief, 52, to replace Atef Abeid as prime minister. A change of government had been expected for months.
Nazief is a former state minister for communications and information. Mubarak’s choice follows a pattern of appointing technocrats to the prime minister’s post -- to avoid empowering a potential challenger, critics say.
The 76-year-old Mubarak, a close U.S. ally, has not designated a successor. There are concerns about his health; he recently had surgery to repair a slipped disk.
