Diesel Vehicles’ Idling Limited to 5 Minutes
- Share via
California air pollution officials approved a new rule Thursday that will make it illegal to leave diesel-powered trucks and transit buses running idle for longer than five minutes.
The California Air Resources Board passed the new restriction in hopes of cutting vehicle emissions of tiny particles linked to respiratory problems, and the gases that help form smog.
The rule will take effect next year. Violators will be subject to a $100 fine.
State officials exempted truck drivers who sleep in their cabs but plan to reconsider that exemption next year.
