* Maytag Corp. said it lost $41.1 million, or 52 cents a share, for the second quarter reversing a profit of $25.2 million, or 32 cents, a year earlier. Sales were $1.15 billion, down from $1.16 billion a year ago.
* Automaker Volkswagen reported a 9% profit decline in the second quarter and said its operating profit for the year would be lower than earlier forecasts. Net income fell to $443 million. Sales rose 8.4% to $29.74 billion.
* Halliburton Co. posted its third straight quarterly loss as it cut its estimate of payments it will get from insurers for asbestos claims against the company. The second-quarter net loss was $663 million, or $1.51 a share, contrasted with profit of $26 million, or 6 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 38% to $4.96 billion, mostly because of contracts to repair oil fields and supply U.S. troops in Iraq.
