Gay Marriage Confers Responsibilities Too
- Share via
Re “After Gay Parents Split Up,” July 22: It seems painfully ironic that California Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer would argue in court that “as a matter of public policy, same-sex couples should have the same financial responsibilities toward the children they bring into this world as those of opposite-sex couples,” when California law bars same-sex couples from marrying.
Granting a marriage license confers the oft-talked-about benefits for the couple, yes, but also the responsibilities Lockyer speaks of that benefit children.
Instead of spending time and taxpayer money to ensure the welfare of children on a case-by-case basis, the fair solution would be to allow all couples to wed.
