A federal grand jury has indicted a Yorba Linda man on charges of trying to board a flight at John Wayne Airport with a loaded gun, a knife and 10 syringes, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Ali Reza Khatami, 65, was arrested June 24. He told authorities at the time that he had forgotten that the weapons were in his carry-on bag.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Khatami is free on $100,000 bail.
The three-count indictment supersedes a previous single charge of trying to carry a concealed weapon onto an aircraft.
Khatami had a .38-caliber handgun and a six-inch knife with him when he tried to board the Chicago-bound plane, Orange County sheriff’s officials said.
He is a U.S. citizen who has lived in the country for 40 years.
