Kudos to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for promoting bicycle use (May 4). How about a “Bike to School Day” follow-up to the May 20 “Bike to Work Day”? Bike fairs -- with schools pairing up with nearby bike shops and police to teach safety and display bikes and accessories for carrying things -- along with incentives for kids to ride to school might also reduce the need for parents to drive their kids everywhere. Since it is legal to ride on the sidewalk in Los Angeles, justifiable fears about the safety of riding in heavy traffic can be allayed.
