To remake in English Masayuki Suo’s exquisitely ingratiating original movie about a successful businessman’s desperate bid to cope with miserable alienation may seem a no-brainer, although there’s the casting question. Richard Gere makes a handsome partner, but can Jennifer Lopez shed the baggage that has erased her appeal? She really can act; we just rarely get to see it.
