Christie’s International said it sold a rare 18th century Italian cello made by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini to Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey for $629,163, setting a world auction record for a Guadagnini cello.
The seller at the London auction was a musician whose family acquired the cello in the 1940s, Christie’s said in a statement. The instrument, made in Parma in 1760, is one of only five Guadagnini cellos that have sold at auction in the past 20 years, it said.
