Knowing Ray

In “The Soul of ‘Ray’ ” [Nov. 3], Patrick Goldstein quotes producer-director Taylor Hackford responding to my critique of his film: “What Ritz is essentially saying is, ‘I’m the only one who really knows Ray Charles.’ ”
I’m not saying that at all. I don’t believe that. I believe Taylor knew Ray extremely well, as did many others. There’s much to admire in Taylor’s movie, and Ray fans, myself included, are grateful that the film will expand Ray’s legacy.
I simply see the crucial moments in Ray’s life -- the character-defining moments -- differently than Taylor. And knowing many of the characters in the movie, I object to their unnecessary distortion.
