O’Toole Leads San Clemente Golfers

The San Clemente girls’ golf team repeated as the Southern Section’s Southern Division champion, shooting a team score of 400 for a 35-shot victory over Irvine University on Friday at El Prado Chino Creek Golf Course in Chino Hills.

Ryann O’Toole led the Tritons with a two-under 71.

University, third-place finisher Corona del Mar and fourth-place Irvine Northwood joined San Clemente as qualifiers for the Southern Section finals Monday at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

Football

Santa Monica Lighthouse Christian has forfeited victories over Santa Maria Valley Christian, Walnut Southlands Christian and Big Pine in nonleague, eight-man play for using an ineligible player, a Southern Section official said.

The Saints’ record falls to 1-4 overall. Valley Christian improves to 1-5, Southlands Christian to 3-5 and Big Pine to 7-0.

Honors

Temecula Valley’s Jessica Thompson and Newport Harbor’s Trevor Theriot were named state winners for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. They are being honored for their academic excellence, athletic accomplishments and community involvement.

Thompson, a 5-foot-9 guard who was named a Times’ all-regional player, averaged 22.4 points in leading Temecula Valley (24-5) to the Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals last season.

Theriot, a 6-1, 225-pound linebacker and running back, leads Newport Harbor (7-0-1) with 667 yards rushing despite dislocating his left elbow in the third week of the season.

By the end of the month, the state winners will be narrowed to 12 national finalists, and a winner will be named Dec. 14.

In addition, 18 state finalists were named, including from the Southland: Jessica Demorest, San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s; Katie Appleton, Apple Valley; Priscyla Rios, Cathedral City; Christopher Gurrola, Fillmore, and Randall Reynoso, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul.

Passings

Delwyn Goodyear, a longtime coach and administrator at Culver City High, died Monday of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 81.

Goodyear began coaching in 1950 when Culver City opened. He became a varsity basketball coach and was an assistant football coach through the 1961-62 season. He became athletic director the following school year and retired in 1988.

Services will be private. A memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Culver City High Boosters Club, with funds to be earmarked for a Culver City High Hall of Fame, one of Goodyear’s pet projects.
