The American Film Institute’s next TV special will focus on the 100 greatest “quips, comebacks and catchphrases” in the history of movies. Ballots with 400 candidates were distributed Wednesday to more than 1,500 film industry workers, critics and historians.
“Great movie quotes become part of our cultural vocabulary,” said Jean Picker Firstenberg, AFI’s chief executive officer.
Among the nominees: “May the force be with you” (“Star Wars”); “Here’s lookin’ at you, kid” (“Casablanca”); “You can’t handle the truth!” (“A Few Good Men”); “Show me the money!” (“Jerry Maguire”) and “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” (“Gone With the Wind”).
The winners will be unveiled in a three-hour program on CBS next June.
