Residents Return Home as Utility Fires Put Out

Newport Coast residents evacuated because of two underground electrical vault fires were allowed back into their homes Saturday night, fire officials said Sunday.
Ten to 12 homes on Pelican Hill Circle were evacuated after an eruption of 10-foot flames about 8:30 p.m., a Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman said.
An explosion 15 minutes later knocked several firefighters to the ground. Once the fires were extinguished, residents were allowed back into their homes about 10 p.m.
