Mariners’ Wilson to Retire

Seattle Mariner catcher Dan Wilson, sidelined most of the year by a knee injury, plans to retire after this season.
The 36-year-old Wilson tore a ligament in his right knee on May 4 while returning to first base after a teammate hit a fly ball against the Angels. He has been on the 60-day disabled list since May 6.
“The relationship between my family and the Mariners’ family has been amazing,” Wilson said Monday. “Our relationship is not over, just changing. I look forward to staying involved in some way, shape or form in the years to come.”
The club would like to bring him back as a coach or in the front office.

First baseman Albert Pujols probably will sit out a few games because of a sore upper right leg.... Reliever Ben Weber, a former Angel, accepted an outright assignment to triple-A Louisville, effectively ending his season with the Cincinnati Reds.... The Florida Marlins re-signed utility infielder Mike Mordecai, who spent this season managing the club’s Class-A Jamestown team.... The New York Yankees won a coin flip and will play host to the Boston Red Sox if a one-game playoff is needed to break a tie for the AL East title.
