Tribal leaders named a new Maori king in New Zealand today as ceremonies began for the funeral and burial of the late queen, who will be laid to rest atop a sacred mountain surrounded by five royal forebears.
The new king, Te Arikinui Tuheitia Paki, eldest son of the late Queen Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, was named at a traditional Maori meeting in Ngaruawahia village, six days after his mother died at 75.
King Tuheitia Paki, 51, wearing his late mother’s feather cloak, sat on an ornate wooden throne beside her casket shortly before the funeral service began.
