From Times Wire Reports
The highway leading to the historic mining town of Virginia City is open again after crews covered a sinkhole caused by heavy rain and snow over the New Year’s Day weekend.
Nevada Department of Transportation officials said the portion of Highway 342 just north of Silver City was built over an old mine, and the sinkhole -- 30 feet in diameter and almost as deep -- opened over the mine shaft.
Crews built an underground bridge to support the roadway, then covered the sinkhole with rock and fill. A temporary asphalt roadbed was installed.
