New Limits on Media Are Met With Criticism

Kazakh President Nursultan A. Nazarbayev signed new legislation tightening controls on the media, amid criticism from the United States and Europe.
The amendments put reporters under tighter state control and make obtaining a license harder for new outlets in a country where media are already under strong pressure from the state.
Nazarbayev had vetoed similar legislation in 2004 after criticism from the West.
