Eluding a just sentence

Re “Kenneth L. Lay 1942 -- 2006: Business Star to Icon of Greed,” obituary, July 6

Isn’t it comforting to know that one can destroy the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people, be convicted and, while awaiting sentencing, pass away peacefully in your luxury holiday home in Aspen.

Today, my sympathies are with those whose lives he destroyed -- those who could only dream about visiting Aspen, let alone owning property there.

One might ponder how you explain to your children that destroying the lives of thousands leaves you the holiday home and the lifestyle, whereas stealing to survive will see you locked away without bail in a county hellhole.

Justice? Not in my book, though the new holiday home is probably slightly warmer and unlikely to feature skiing.
