From Times Wire Reports
Survivors picked through the rubble of their flattened homes in Riegelwood after a tornado killed eight people. The area was the hardest hit by a storm system that later swept through the Northeast, knocking out power and flooding streets.
Gov. Michael F. Easley toured the devastated area as disaster assessment teams surveyed what was left of a mobile home park and several brick homes that were flattened by the storm.
The deadly storm system left a three-day path of destruction from Louisiana to Maine, killing a total of 12 people.
