Global warming bills defended

Re “Senators feel heat on climate change,” letters, Jan. 23
I take issue with those who say that the legislation I have introduced on global warming doesn’t go far enough. This bill would be a major step forward on global warming, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% from projected levels by 2020. It is practical, doable and the most aggressive bill supported by major energy companies to date.
There is no question that we need to do more. I have introduced a bill to increase fuel economy standards by 10 miles per gallon over 10 years, and I am in the process of introducing three other bills to tackle the problem from all angles. This includes promoting E-85 [ethanol] and biodiesel, improving energy efficiency and limiting carbon dioxide emissions from heavy industry.
