at Toronto 14, New York 3: “How many did they end up with?” Derek Jeter asked after the Yankees’ playoff hopes took another hit. “I don’t even know.” Roy Halladay beat the Yankees for the third straight time, Marco Scutaro hit a three-run homer, and the Blue Jays handed New York its worst loss of the season. Halladay (15-9) improved to 13-5 in 30 games against the Yankees, yielding three runs and five hits in seven innings. He walked two and matched a season high with nine strikeouts. On the other side of the ledger, Sidney Ponson (7-4) matched a season high by giving up seven runs and eight hits in two-plus innings. He walked one and didn’t strike out a batter. The right-hander has won twice in 10 starts since New York signed him June 19. New York’s previous worst loss was a 12-2 home setback to Baltimore on May 20.

Oakland 2, at Seattle 0: Emil Brown homered and Greg Smith gave up four hits over six innings for his first win since June as the A’s won for the seventh time in 32 games since the All-Star break. The Mariners lost their seventh in a row.

at Cleveland 10, Kansas City 3: Cliff Lee improved to 18-2, Grady Sizemore had seven runs batted in and the Royals lost their fifth game in a row to end a 1-8 trip.

Minnesota 2, at Angels 1 (12 innings): The Angels never scored after Mark Teixeira’s home run in the first inning.
