Pellicano seeks to be his own lawyer

Indicted private investigator Anthony Pellicano has asked a federal judge for permission to represent himself in his pending trial on charges of racketeering and wiretapping.

The request, filed in court papers Friday, is scheduled to be heard as early as next week by U.S. District Judge Dale S. Fischer, who is presiding over the case against Pellicano and five co-defendants. The trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 27.

In court papers, Pellicano did not state a reason for seeking to represent himself and relieve attorneys Steven Gruel and Michael Artan as his attorneys. But Pellicano once before asked the court for permission to represent himself in the case on grounds that he could not afford to properly pay his counsel.
