CASEY AFFLECK | “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”
The 32-year-old garners his first Academy Award nomination as the title character who shoots the famous outlaw. He earned nominations for a Critics Choice, Golden Globe, London Critics Circle and SAG Award for “Ford.” The National Board of Review, San Francisco Film Critics Circle and Satellite Awards (this last a tie with Tom Wilkinson) chose him best supporting actor.
JAVIER BARDEM | “No Country for Old Men”
The Spanish actor, 38, earns his first Oscar nomination in this category for his turn as Anton Chigurh, the coldblooded assassin in the Coen brothers’ western noir. He previously was nominated for a best actor Academy Award as artist Reinaldo Arenas in “Before Night Falls.” In addition to winning the Golden Globe for supporting actor in “No Country,” he’s nominated for supporting actor and ensemble member by SAG and for a BAFTA.
PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN | “Charlie Wilson’s War”
The versatile film and stage actor who won the best actor Oscar two years ago for “Capote,” earns his first nomination in this category as Gust Avrakotos, a maverick CIA agent who helps a womanizing congressman help the Afghans rid their country of the Soviet Union. The 40-year-old Hoffman has received Critics Choice and BAFTA nominations for “Wilson.”
HAL HOLBROOK | “Into the Wild”
Befriending a young Sean Penn on the set of the 1981 TV movie “The Killing of Randy Webster” has paid off handsomely for the 82-year-old actor. Writer-director Penn gave Holbrook the role for which he’s received his first Oscar nomination: Ron Franz, a widower who befriends a young traveler. Holbrook has received SAG, Critics Choice and Chicago Film Critics Assn. nominations.
TOM WILKINSON | “Michael Clayton”
The British actor garners his first nomination in this category for his performance as Arthur Edens, a brilliant but mentally unstable New York attorney. Wilkinson, 59, previously received an Oscar nomination for best actor for 2001’s “In the Bedroom.” He’s received nominations for the Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, Critics Choice, Chicago Film Critics and London Critics for “Clayton.”
