New York City Opera said Friday that Gerard Mortier has stepped down from his post of general manager before he launched a single new production.
In a statement, Mortier said he couldn’t continue in the job “given the significantly reduced funds available” to transform the opera house according to his vision.
The Belgian-born Mortier, 64, is currently serving out his term heading up the Opera de Paris. His City Opera appointment was announced in February 2007.
“Although the board and I have worked hard to revise the budget in light of the current economic climate, it is unfortunately not possible to proceed with our exciting plans,” Mortier said in a news release.
