No. 1 Mater Dei defeats No. 3 Cajon, 64-56

The Santa Ana Mater Dei girls’ basketball team, ranked No. 1 in Southern California by The Times, defeated No. 3 San Bernardino Cajon, 64-56, on Friday night in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High.
Sophomore Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 19 of her team-high 21 points in the second half for the Monarchs. Alexyz Vaioletama added 13 points and Kathryn Haugen had eight, including two three-pointers in the first quarter.
Mater Dei (25-0) trailed Cajon (23-2) by seven points early in the third quarter, then went on a 16-0 run over a span of 4 minutes 50 seconds to gain control and stayed ahead the rest of the way. Cajon closed to within five points on three occasions but could get no closer.
Layshia Clarendon scored 28 points and Darshae Burnside had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Cajon.
