Long Beach Poly hopes running game rebounds against St. Bonaventure

No. 12 Long Beach Poly (0-1) vs. No. 4 Ventura St. Bonaventure (1-0) at Ventura High, 7:30 p.m., Prime Ticket (tape-delayed) -- Poly Coach Raul Lara said he might make personnel changes after a 30-7 loss to Anaheim Servite. The Jackrabbits fell behind early and were forced to throw 33 times. “Hopefully, we can establish some type of running game this week,” Lara said. “If we can’t, we’re going to have problems.” St. Bonaventure had little trouble moving the ball during a 34-10 victory against Bellflower St. John Bosco; Devon Blackledge had 168 yards rushing and Logan Meyer passed for 256 yards. No. 7 Temecula Chaparral (0-0) at No. 17 Corona Centennial (0-0), 7:30 p.m. -- Centennial has won its last three meetings against Chaparral, which has returning starters in running back Jonathan Diaz, quarterback Mitchell Glasmann and all-purpose standout Darius Guillory, who plays receiver, running back, linebacker, safety and cornerback. Centennial will rotate Michael Arredondo and Michael Eubank at quarterback and will use converted defensive back Dion Bass at running back in place of Denzel Hawkins, who has been sidelined by a tonsil infection. The pick: Chaparral.

No. 9 Los Angeles Loyola (1-0) at No. 19 Mission Viejo (1-0), 7:30 p.m. -- With both teams breaking in quarterbacks, the onus probably will fall on the running games. Loyola has Anthony Barr and Jared Baker, who combined for 236 yards in a 28-18 victory against Manhattan Beach Mira Costa. Mission Viejo features Jake Marshall, Dallas Kessman and Orange Lutheran transfer Exavier Edwards, none of whom were tested much during a 55-0 rout of Inglewood Morningside. Mission Viejo throttled Loyola, 37-7, in the first round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs last season, but Diablos Coach Bob Johnson said Loyola was “definitely better than last year. They’re going to be tough.” The pick: Loyola.

No. 22 Norco (0-0) at No. 1 L.A. Crenshaw (1-0), 7 p.m. -- Running back DeAnthony Thomas might not play for Crenshaw because of a sprained ankle suffered last week during the Cougars’ 28-27 victory against Lakewood. “It changes things for us a bit and we have to compensate for it,” Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said. The Cougars will rely on sophomore tailbacks Justin Johnson and Dayvon Allen if Thomas is sidelined. Norco has defeated Crenshaw in each of the last two seasons. The pick: Crenshaw.
