Box Office: ‘Insurgent’ goes into weekend with a strong start

“Insurgent,” the second film in the YA-based “Divergent” film series, continued its strong start going into Saturday, pulling in an estimated $21.3 million, according to box office estimates.
Even with a healthy beginning, industry watchers speculate that “Insurgent” may fall short of its initial $60-million projection at the domestic box office, putting it closer to or even below the $54.6-million opening weekend for “Divergent” last year.
Still, filmgoers are giving “Insurgent,” which stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, a big thumbs-up, awarding it an A-minus in Cinemascore ratings.
Meanwhile, Disney’s “Cinderella” continues its fairy tale run, coming in second with a $9.5-million tally for a two-week total of more than $97 million. The debut of Sean Penn’s action thriller “The Gunman” pulled in $1.8 million for third place, while Liam Neeson’s “Run All Night,” which came in second last week, dropped to fourth place with $1.4 milloin for a total of $16 million.
Coming in fifth is “Kingsman: the Secret Service” bringing in $1.2 million for a 36-day total of $111 million.
