Kenneth Turan’s DVD Pick of the Week: Two personal favorites -- “Hester Street” and “Downhill Racer.”

All the DVDs and Blu-rays I select are favorites, but some films are more special to me than others. This week, I want to highlight two of those.
Joan Micklin Silver’s marvelous 1975 “Hester Street” was not only a pioneering American independent film, it also made wonderful use of the expressive Yiddish language (subtitled, of course) and got a lead actress Oscar nomination for Carol Kane.

Michael Ritchie’s 1969 “Downhill Racer” is a very different film I’m also quite fond of. Written by James Salter, it features a youthful Robert Redford as an ultra-ambitious Olympic skier. The player-coach interaction between Redford and Gene Hackman makes this one of the most truthful sports films out there.
