From his evergreen songs, we all know that Suzanne brought Leonard Cohen “tea and oranges that come all the way from China.” He gave us a sage reminder that, “There is a crack, a crack in everything/ That’s how the light gets in.” He once confessed: “Like a bird on a wire/ Like a drunk in a midnight choir/ I have tried in my way/ To be free.”

And more than any other sentiment, Cohen showed us that sometimes salvation springs from a simple, celestial chorus of “hallelujah.”

To the casual fan, the beloved bard, who died this week at 82, was best known for “Hallelujah” and the various covers it spawned. But his catalog, stretching back to 1967, is deep and mystical and far more nuanced than he gets credit for.
