Scorpion Walter (Elyes Gabel) and the team try to avert a tragedy on Christmas Eve when a child is trapped in a cave near a beach, and could be drowned by the rising tide. Katharine McPhee and Eddie Kaye Thomas also star in this new episode. 9 p.m. CBS
Jane the Virgin The show’s mid-season finale gives Jane and Rafael (Gina Rodriguez, Justin Baldoni) big worries about Petra (Yael Grobglas) as they find out more about her. Ivonne Coll, Andrea Navedo and Jaime Camil also star with singer-actress Paulina Rubio guest-starring as herself. 9 p.m. KTLA
Ascension In the premiere of this new miniseries a secret space mission in 1963 sent a collection of Americans on a 100 year voyage to a nearby star. Brian Van Holt, Tricia Helfer and Brandon P. Bell star. 9 p.m. Syfy
NCIS: Los Angeles When the team probes a robbery at a cyber-security firm, Callen Chris O’Donnell) is forced off the case by Hetty (Linda Hunt) because his girlfriend (Elizabeth Bogush) is a witness in the case. 10 p.m. CBS
State of Affairs President Payton (Alfre Woodard) has questions for Nick (Chris L. McKenna) about the convoy attack, but he can’t be found in this new episode. Katherine Heigl also stars. 10 p.m. NBC
Journey to Planet Earth Matt Damon returns as host and narrator of the documentary series in a new episode probing the impact of atmospheric elements on domestic safety. 10 p.m. KOCE
