Second dead whale found along California coast

A second whale carcass has landed along the California coast in less than a week.
A mammoth whale carcass was seen floating Wednesday afternoon near Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay.
“We are definitely keeping an eye on it,” said Sarah van Schagen, a spokeswoman for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.
Once the whale washes ashore, a group of researchers will assess the situation and determine an appropriate response, she said.
A necropsy will probably be performed on the beach because the whale is too large to transport.
Earlier this week, a dead 50-foot fin whale washed ashore below the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant in San Diego.
It’s unclear why the marine mammals died.
Van Schagen said a great number of dead whales that have washed ashore in the past had died of natural causes.
