Jose Sulaiman
Longtime head of World Boxing Council
Jose Sulaiman, 82, a wealthy Mexican businessman who was the longtime head of the World Boxing Council sanctioning body, died Thursday in Los Angeles, said his son Mauricio. The elder Sulaiman had been hospitalized at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for months for a heart condition.
Sulaiman was born May 30, 1931, in Ciudad Victoria in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. He boxed as an amateur and became a manager, trainer and referee. At 16, he joined a Mexican boxing commission. He moved to the WBC in 1968, won a unanimous vote to become president in 1975 and was in charge ever since.
He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007.
Frank Marth
Prolific character actor
Frank Marth, a prolific character actor who was among Jackie Gleason’s cast of characters in “The Honeymooners” and appeared in dozens of TV series from the 1950s through the ‘80s, died Sunday at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, said his wife, actress Hope Holliday. He was 91 and had Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia.
