A 12-year-old Colorado girl was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly trying to fatally poison her mother for taking away her iPhone, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
The unidentified preteen is accused of trying to poison her mother twice, once on March 2, and then four days later, said Cmdr. Heidi Prentup, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
During the first attempt, the girl allegedly put bleach in her mother’s breakfast smoothie, Prentup said. The mother noticed the smell of bleach, but assumed the glass had not been cleaned thoroughly. She drank the smoothie, authorities said.
Four days later, the suspect allegedly put bleach in her mother’s water carafe kept in the bedroom, Prentup said. The victim again noticed the smell of bleach, but it is unclear if she drank from the carafe, Prentup said.
The victim confronted her daughter about the second incident, which is when she allegedly learned of the girl’s deadly intentions, Prentup said.
Authorities were notified of both incidents March 6, Prentup said. The girl was arrested on two counts of suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.
The suspect is being held in the Boulder County Juvenile Center while the district attorney’s office reviews the case for formal charges.
